Can Coffee Prevent Gout?

By Diane Declet

I know I was skeptical when I heard that coffee may help prevent gout. How could that be right? However, a 12 year study done involving 46,000 men showed promising results. Results reported in the online Health Day (News for Healthier Living) state that men who drink 4-5 cups of coffee daily have a 40% less chance of developing gout. Drinking 6 or more cups resulted in a 60% reduced risk!

Caffeinated coffee showed the best results and Health Day reports that coffee has a strong antioxidant called phenol chlorogenic acid which is attributed to lowering the risk of gout. This is not to discount the possible problems associated with drinking that much coffee.

People who want to avoid developing gout need to avoid purine rich foods which cause uric acid build-up. This build up crystallizes in the joints, causing a lot of pain. Usually the first symptoms of gout appear in the big toe, causing it to become red and swollen. Any touch to the toe, like the brush of a bed sheet, brings excruciating pain. Unfortunately if left untreated, gout attacks may return more frequently and of longer duration.

It is very important to be strict in your diet if you have gout, or want to prevent it. Seafood, like mussels, clams, and salmon are very high in purines. Liver and other organ meats are culprits too. Being overweight by 15% or more also increases the risk of developing gout.

Eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and taking supplements and enzymes known to help with gout may give you the protection you are looking for. While drinking coffee may prevent gout, it's not the only natural remedy you should consider.
